Message from the Dean

Every year this Faculty sends several hundred graduates into Hong Kong's kindergartens, schools, clinics and public offices. Some will spend a career in a single classroom; others will help write the policy that shapes a thousand of them. What they have in common is a preparation that refuses to treat practice and research as separate trades.

That conviction runs through everything we do. Our five departments — Curriculum and Instruction, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Special Education and Counselling, and Education Policy and Leadership — between them cover the whole arc of a learner's life, from a child's first words to the governance of a school system. They are deliberately kept close to one another, because the questions that matter rarely respect a departmental boundary.

They are kept close to schools, too. Our students learn a great deal on campus, but they learn as much on practicum, in kindergartens and classrooms across the territory, working alongside teachers who have taken on the considerable trouble of teaching someone else how to teach. We are grateful to those partner schools and centres; the Faculty would be a much thinner place without them.
