“A faculty of education is judged by what happens in classrooms it will never see. That is why we put our students into schools early, keep our researchers close to the people they study, and treat a partnership with a school as a long conversation rather than a project with an end date.”

How the Faculty took shape

One Faculty out of many colleges

The teacher education work of Hong Kong's colleges of education is brought together under a single institution, and the Faculty's founding departments take shape.

Research degrees begin

The Faculty admits its first MPhil and PhD candidates, and research supervision becomes part of every department's work.

Five departments

The Faculty settles into its present shape: curriculum and instruction, early childhood education, education policy and leadership, psychology, and special education and counselling.

University title

The institution is granted university title, and the Faculty's degrees are awarded under the new name.

The Innovation Hub opens

A shared space where staff, students and partner schools prototype new pedagogies and classroom technology before they reach a real class.

A teaching session

Teaching that starts in a classroom

Every initial teacher education programme in the Faculty is built around time in a partner school, supervised jointly by a University tutor and a school mentor. Coursework follows the placement rather than the other way round.
