A research team from the Department has been commissioned to review how aspiring principals are prepared for the role, tracking a cohort of 60 middle leaders through certification and into their first year of headship.
The study will report on the gap between certification and practice — what newly appointed principals say they were not ready for, and which parts of their preparation they draw on most. Findings are expected in mid-2027 and will inform the Department’s professional development programmes.
