A team from the Department of Early Childhood Education has been recognised in this year's Faculty teaching awards for its work on early literacy and numeracy in the undergraduate programme.
The team rebuilt the second-year literacy course around a shared bank of classroom video from partner kindergartens, so that student teachers analyse real Cantonese and English storytelling sessions before they attempt their own. Practicum supervisors report that students arrive better prepared to plan and to talk about what they see.
The materials are being made available to partner centres for their own in-service training, and the Department will extend the approach to its early numeracy course in the coming year.
