Field experience and practicum

For allocation, dates and paperwork, contact the Field Experience Office at fe@eduhk.hk. For anything about teaching itself — planning, classroom management, your observed lessons — speak to your University supervisor first; they are named on your placement letter.

Urgent matters during a block practicum, including anything involving pupil safety, go to the Field Experience Office by telephone the same day.

Tell the school and your University supervisor before the school day starts, then email the Field Experience Office with a medical certificate. Absence of more than three days in a block normally has to be made up, and the Office will arrange the additional days with the school.

Raise it with your University supervisor at once. Most difficulties — an unclear timetable, a mentor who is stretched, a class that is not what you were briefed on — are resolved with a single conversation between the supervisor and the school.

If the matter is serious, or if you do not feel able to raise it on site, contact the Head of Field Experience directly. Placements can be changed mid-block where there is good reason, and doing so does not count against your assessment.

A failed practicum may be repeated once, normally in the following academic year. You will be given a written account of what was not met and a development plan agreed with your programme adviser before the repeat is scheduled.
