Getting help

I am struggling to keep up — who should I tell first?

Your programme adviser. They can see the whole of your record and can act on it: reduce your load, arrange an extension, or refer you on. Telling them early is what makes the options available; most of them close once an assessment deadline has passed.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Counselling records are held separately from your academic record and are not shared with your department, your adviser or your family. The only exception is where there is an immediate risk to your safety or someone else’s, which the counsellor will discuss with you.

What examination arrangements can be made?

Extra time, a separate room, a reader or scribe, enlarged papers, and rest breaks are all available where they are supported by documentation. Register with the accessibility team at least six weeks before the examination period so that the arrangements are in place for every paper.

I need help outside office hours

The University counselling hotline operates 24 hours during term and can be reached on (852) 2948 7299. In an emergency, call 999 or go to the nearest accident and emergency department; tell the Faculty afterwards so that your assessments can be adjusted.
