School-based guidance programme recognised for its work with beginning counsellors

A one-to-one guidance session in a school setting

The Department's school-based guidance programme has been recognised by the Faculty for the way it supports beginning counsellors during their first year in schools.

Students on the programme carry a small supervised caseload in a partner school while meeting fortnightly in supervision groups on campus. The structure was designed to close the gap that graduates repeatedly described between coursework and the pace of a real guidance office.

The Department will extend the supervision model to its part-time cohort next year, and is preparing a short course for experienced guidance teachers who take on student supervision in their own schools.
